What Goes Around...

I have this funny fear that, up until now, has yet to be realized. (Maybe fear's too strong a word, best saved for things that really make my paranoia act up, like people whispering in my presence.) Anyway, I imagine that one day, either this site, or TVGA, or another site that I visit is going to have the dubious honor of being mocked on another website.

I always imagined that TVGA would end up as either the Awful Link of the Day on Something Awful or (worse) we would be featured on The Weekend Web, our strange banter laid open for all of the web to see. Then would come the swarm of goons trying to sign up and post just to mock us.

Of course there would be some irony in this. The internet is a cruel place, but there's a definite chain of mockery. You can only make fun of sites that don't look as nice or have as many visitors as yours, unless you just want to go completely against the grain. And since we enjoy making fun of people, we really have no recourse, because were we featured on The Weekend Web for example, we would be the weaker site.

So, anyway, it's finally happened. I noticed an odd referrer in TVGA's access logs, linking to a particular post. But it wasn't SA that did it. It was The Cult of Gashman, a World of Warcraft guild I encountered back in my priesting days. Here's an excerpt from their post:

...Oh, but we did have some good times and Zeshin and Jaur tried to convert many infidels to Gashmanism.

But I had no clue that one of them would actually go on their trailer park internet forum and post about how much Gashman kicked his ass. Well you folks are in luck because I'll show you, here is the link to Mr. Aldric making a post in the "Tennessee Valley Gaming Forum".

"Trailer park internet forum"? Well, OK, I'll give it that. (Although, that's pretty big talk considering the source.) It's phpBB, we have squat for active members, and even the ones who do post weird stuff sometimes. (See the replies to the referenced post for an example.) I guess if I wasn't involved with TVGA, I'd consider it a "trailer park forum." I'd probably want to make fun of it too, because I'd think it was unfunny. But that's just because everyone on the internet with an odd sense of humor thinks they're funny while paradoxically thinking other people with an odd sense of humor are just strange.

Plus, looking at my post, I do come off as a bit of a goofball. Of course I think that about all my forum posts after I've posted them. Sometimes I think that about my forum posts as I'm posting them. Actually, I'm starting to feel that way about this blog entry too. (Maybe they'll link to this as well. The cycle of linking will just continue, and everyone involved will get plenty of extra points with the search engines.)
